Dale Mettam, MS Art
When did you start?
Why do you stay?
The atmosphere of creative, collaborative education makes both an attractive work environment and one where Art, as a subject, is both appreciated and integrated throughout the curriculum as a whole. Additionally, Project Based Learning allows me to take Art from something that doesn’t seem to exist outside galleries & museums, and show just how much we rely on Art in our day-to-day lives.
What is our future?
So bright we gotta wear shades.
What drew your interest?
My kids have attended FLA since it opened, so I was part of the “family” long before I started working here. When the opportunity to teach Middle School Arthappened, I saw a chance to combine my passion, my previous professional experiences and become even more invested in the education of both my own kids and the kids in our wider community as well.
How have you grown?
Mostly around the waist…. Teachers eat TERRIBLE diets and on HORRIBLE schedules.
- or -
In my previous career, while working in Art, I tended to find a process that worked and then rely heavily on that. Jumping back into a school environment has allowed me to get back to some basics and to look at other areas of Art that I had been forced, by necessity, to not indulge in. Additionally, teaching allows me the chance to continue my own learning, which in turn opens up the possibilities of new and interesting projects tackled by the students.
