We asked all Firebirds, what is your story here at Falls Lake Academy. We want to know what drew you to Falls Lake Academy, why have you chosen to stay, and since you have been here how have we grown. What do you think is in Falls Lake Academy's future?
This is our story.

Our future is bright! We have a great team of faculty and staff that genuinely care about the success of each student. I know that together, we will create a caring, supportive environment that will foster the needs of each individual student to help them develop to their full potential.
- Hannah McGarry
FLA is like no other place I have ever been. The environment is student centered and allows everyone to have a part in being successful. The level of learning at FLA sets the standard for other schools in our area. FLA is a place I love to come to everyday to make change in a positive working community.
- Nealie Whitt
I came to Falls Lake Academy in its third year of existence. I immediately felt right at home and knew this was where I wanted to be. Our families, students, staff, and board of directors work together to make FLA feel like home to everyone that walks through our doors. Building relationships is an essential part of teaching and learning at Falls Lake Academy; not only relationships with teachers and students, but with families and community members as well. We have doubled in size since my first year at FLA. Thanks to the input of stakeholders and student centered decisions by our Board of Directors, we have been able to improve as we have grown and will continue to do so year after year. I love that our students strive to excel and are EXCITED about learning! The fact that our students can spend their entire educational career here with us makes our journey to excellence that much more exciting. The sky is the limit for our Firebirds!
- Amy Hobgood
I was working as an athletic director at a school that competed with Falls Lake for the past few years in athletics. Due to our school closing this year, I was searching for my next great opportunity. The opportunity came when Patrick told me that I needed to come work at Falls Lake. I know Patrick and Stephanie from when we worked together at East Wake Academy and knew this is where I wanted to be!
- Kate Wright
Our future is unlimited. While we have had high success with state testing and growth, what really matters to me is that we are providing our students with real world experiences, critical thinking skills, collaboration and public speaking skills, and a solid foundation for college.
- Lisa Mayhew
The administration has worked tirelessly to ensure our first graduating class has all they need in order to achieve their “higher education” goals. Since I have a child in the first graduating class, this speak volumes to me! The board is always looking for ways to improve the foundation, and working toward solutions to problems that arise. The FLA future is bright!
- Heather Cudak
Our future is to be a successful K-12 school. When kids graduate from FLA they will have the tools needed to be successful in life.
- Lily Seccia
I have been at FLA since the school opened. As Director of Student Services I never want to be anywhere else. FLA is student centered and student focused. When tough decisions have to be made, it always goes back to what is best for students. There are many great things about being a K-12 public charter school, and I feel like we discover and develop something new every year that really benefits our students in a way that just wouldn’t be possible if we weren’t K-12 all on the same campus. The 2018-2019 school year will see many first. Our first graduating class, our first year in our new building dedicated to our high school students, or first year of being complete K-12. But I am confident with the mentality of the students, staff, parents, and board members of our FLA community we will never stop growing!

I have seen a lot of change since that first year and FLA has only gotten better. The campus has grown so much and the teachers have grown too.
- Jean Kwiatkowski
I continue to work at FLA because I feel surrounded by an exceptional staff where I feel supported and share the same goals and mission that we have for the success of our students. As part of the EC department, I have a passion for EC population of students and I feel that our EC staff does an excellent job collaborating with our school staff to ensure that our specific students are supported and their needs are met in/out of the classroom.

I love the “family atmosphere” that can be experienced from the moment you arrive on campus and can appreciate the opportunities and respect given to teachers and students through project based learning as a charter school.
- Kelly Good
I was looking for a school that shared my passion for education and belief that every student has the ability to grow and learn. I was also looking for a charter school because of my belief that public schools have been failing students. From the moment I became a Firebird, I can easily see the tremendous potential this school has for years to come. The biggest take-away is the family-feeling and support you get the instant you become a Firebird.
- Jon Bruno
I think the school is will continue to impact so many students and families in the area. I see the school being a better and better PBL school with new ideas and activities that will help students learn more and more each year. We have already shown the ability to adapt with the changing technology and we will continue to embrace that in ways to develop our students even more.
- Joey Johnson
I am excited to learn, teach, and grow as an educator while serving the community and children here at FLA.
- Casey Taylor
The future of FLA is that they will produce leaders of tomorrow and productive citizens of the world. FLA will be able to look back one day and say those students were products of FLA’s PBL curriculum. They will become Great Leaders of the future.
- Sharon Harrington
I am excited to see how the Spanish Department grows. For now, we are only offering Spanish 1 and 2, but hopefully the Spanish Department starts to grow with more teachers, as we move into the upper levels of Spanish, and hopefully all the way up to AP.
- Davis Lever
I stay at FLA to watch my children grow academically. I also want to see the students I teach grow and prosper.
- Jennifer Frederick
FLA has a great future as they continue to foster diversity across cultural and intellectual boundaries.
- Kim Landis
The future is promising, I'm looking forward to seeing the different options that will become available to the students. I am also looking forward to seeing a more diverse representations with our students and staff.
- Pamela Criswell
So far it has been an environment that allows me to teach at my best self for English as well as pursue creative interests like Yearbook and Quill. I feel very valued by other teachers and administrators, and I believe this is a place where I will be encouraged to pursue my best self possibly on higher levels of teaching. FLA has really made me feel like a valuable part of a strong, highly functioning community.
- Lavina Bond
To strive to be an accredited school where students can get the knowledge, experience, and social values they need to be successful in their future endeavors.
- Melinda Hicks
Our future is enriching the lives of students. We are also responsible for creating a positive learning experience that our students will not only learn from academically, but socially and emotionally.
- April Black
I enjoy the freedom to implement the style and pace that works best for my students. I also really enjoy the PBL aspect of what we do. Hands on and into the subject are how I like to teach.
- Scott Decker
Having attended charter school for kindergarten through the end of high school, I have always had an interest in other charter schools. FLA is a wonderful charter school that is focused on bringing superior education while making it a memorable experience; that is something anyone with a passion for education should be interested in.
- Victoria Johnson
FLA drew my interest by allowing teachers to approach their classrooms with a “think outside the box” attitude. This allows me as a teacher the freedom and support to get creative within my classroom. FLA also has very clear guiding principles and I always see administration working to stick to those principles.
- Logan Allen
FLA will grow into a family built on positive relationship between staff, students and parents. It’s a great place!
- Jaron Cox
I love our children, I believe in our mission and I am dedicated to seeing that each of our students has a positive education and one in which they thrive and feel secure and cherished.
- Stephanie Yarbrough
The kids. We have a fantastic group of kids here at FLA. I have been fortunate to have been able to work with all grade levels in my time here and can’t imagine a better group of kids with which to work with.
- Jason Porter
I just started here at FLA, but I intend to stay for many years to come. Being here a little over a month, I have already fallen in love with this school. The students are amazing, the staff welcomed me with open arms like I’ve been here for years, and I already having a coaching position which is a passion of mine.
- Weston Pearson
We have grown numerically, of course, and in our knowledge and development of our vision and mission, and how we strive to educate our children.
- Betsie Forsythe
I stay at Falls Lake Academy because I wanted to build an elementary music program. That is what I've been doing and what I want to continue to do.
- Lacey Wallace
As a long time educator in Granville County, I had heard lots of information about FLA. What drew my interest was the job opening for a Reading Specialist. At my interview, I discovered that FLA is dedicated to the identification of problems and getting solutions into place, as quickly as possible. The team that interviewed me was clearly dedicated and passionate about providing a quality educational opportunity to students. I knew that day, that I wanted to join this team.
- Christy Kinder
I was interested in being a part of the FLA staff, because project based learning seemed like a great fit for my teaching style and an interesting approach for my daughter. Inquiry learning and its hands-on approach to learning, teaches children to think for themselves, collaborate with others and apply mastered concepts.
- Tricia Korneluk
I stay at FLA for the students. It has been so rewarding to watch them find passion in what they do. The arts are an escape for a lot of students and the one time during the day they can truly express themselves. I love being part of that experience for them.
